Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling Properly?

An AC that runs but doesn’t cool is usually losing heat-transfer or airflow, most often from a clogged filter, blocked outdoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a control/thermostat issue. The most common real-world cause we find is restricted airflow that forces longer run times and lukewarm supply air. It’s typically repairable; replacement is considered when the unit is old and has recurring major failures. When a system runs nonstop yet only drops a few degrees, we often find an air-side restriction before a refrigerant fault. Our team handles these problems routinely across the Coachella Valley, including homes near Rancho Mirage.

Try these quick checks before you call:

  • Replace a dirty air filter and make sure vents are open.
  • Set thermostat to Cool, Fan Auto, and verify the temperature setpoint.
  • Clear leaves or lint from the outdoor unit’s coils.
  • If you see ice on lines or water by the air handler, turn the AC off and let it thaw.

If cooling doesn’t return within 30 minutes after these steps, book a professional diagnostic to protect the compressor.
